Nearest Neighbor Network Traversal
نویسنده
چکیده
A mobile agent in a network wants to visit every node of an n-node network, using a small number of steps. We investigate the performance of the following \nearest neighbor" heuristic: always go to the nearest unvisited node. If the network graph never changes, then from (Rosenkrantz, Stearns and Lewis, 1977) and (Hurkens and Woeginger, 2004) it follows that (n logn) steps are necessary and su cient in the worst case. We give a simpler proof of the upper bound and an example that improves the best known lower bound. We investigate how the performance of this heuristic changes when it is distributively implemented in a network. Even if network edges are allow to fail over time, we show that the nearest neighbor strategy never runs for more than O(n2) iterations. We also show that any strategy can be forced to take at least n(n 1)=2 steps before all nodes are visited, if the edges of the network are deleted in an adversarial way.

Faster Dual-Tree Traversal for Nearest Neighbor Search
Nearest neighbor search is a nearly ubiquitous problem in computer science. When nearest neighbors are desired for a query set instead of a single query point, dual-tree algorithms often provide the fastest solution, especially in low-to-medium dimensions (i.e. up to a hundred or so), and can give exact results or absolute approximation guarantees, unlike hashing techniques. Using a recent deco...

Abstract Over the last two decades, improvements in developing computational tools made significant contributions to the classification of biological specimens` images to their correspondence species. These days, identification of biological species is much easier for taxonomist and even non-taxonomists due to the development of automated computer techniques and systems. In this study, we d...
متن کاملAn Index Structure for Efficient Reverse Nearest Neighbor Queries
The Reverse Nearest Neighbor (RNN) problem is to find all points in a given data set whose nearest neighbor is a given query point. Just like the Nearest Neighbor (NN) queries, the RNN queries appear in many practical situations such as marketing and resource management. Thus efficient methods for the RNN queries in databases are required. This paper introduces a new index structure, the Rdnn-t...
متن کاملLearning Deep Nearest Neighbor Representations Using Differentiable Boundary Trees
Nearest neighbor (k-NN) methods have been gaining popularity in recent years in light of advances in hardware and efficiency of algorithms. There is a plethora of methods to choose from today, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. One requirement shared between all k-NN based methods is the need for a good representation and distance measure between samples. We introduce a new metho...
متن کاملNearest Neighbor Search using Kd-trees
We suggest a simple modification to the kd-tree search algorithm for nearest neighbor search resulting in an improved performance. The Kd-tree data structure seems to work well in finding nearest neighbors in low dimensions but its performance degrades even if the number of dimensions increases to more than three. Since the exact nearest neighbor search problem suffers from the curse of dimensi...
